A ganglion cyst is a benign soft tissue mass that most commonly occurs along tendon sheaths and joint spaces. These cysts are typically round or oval and are filled with a jellylike fluid. They are often times asymptomatic but depending on the location can be painful if they press on nearby nerves or prevent joint movement.

Causes

  • Repetitive microtrauma
  • Bulging of tissue that surrounds a joint or a tendon

Signs & Symptoms

  • Fluctuant bump
  • Tingling or burning if pressing on a nerve
  • Dull or ache if in tendon or joint
  • Difficulty wearing shoes due to irritation
