Hallux Limitus is a condition that results in stiffness of the big toe joint. It is normally caused by an abnormal alignment of the long bone behind the big toe joint, called the first metatarsal bone. Left untreated, this condition can lead to progressive joint arthritis.

Causes

  • Acute trauma or fracture of big toe
  • Overuse injury from exercise
  • Gout in big toe joint
  • Rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis

Signs & Symptoms

  • Painful jamming of toe joint
  • Callus formation
  • Development of ulcers
  • Painful bone spurs on the top of the big toe joint
