Retrocalcaneal bursitis occurs when the bursa protecting the Achilles tendon from pressue of the heel bone becomes inflamed. This condition is common in athletes and It can be a secondary condition to Achilles tendonitis.

Causes

  • Improper shoe gear
  • Overuse injury
  • Arthritis
  • Increases pressure on the posterior heel

Signs & Symptoms

  • Posterior heel pain
  • Redness or warmth on back of heel
  • Swelling around the back of heel
  • Haglund’s deformity, may coexist with condition
